DAVID ROTHENBERG'S WBAI REVIEW OF
PHILIP ROTH'S THE HUMAN STAIN

Philip Roth has lost none of his ferocity. His new novel, THE HUMAN STAIN (Houghton- Mifflin), is a dazzling account of America at the end of the 20th Century. In an acidic, brilliant opening, he describes a sanctimonious nation obsessed by its President's Penis. I suspect that in fifty years, historians will use that chronicle to determine the country's ethos in 1998.

Writer Nathan Zuckerman, a familiar Roth protagonist, is befriended by an academic colleague. The man, Coleman Silk, is embroiled in a quasi-campus scandal, in addition to having a closet full of secrets. Charismatic and troubled, Silk is the focus of Zuckerman's attention.

As it unravels, we have more than a glimpse of the manner and mores of this country during the second half of the last century.

Philip Roth commands your attention and involvement. THE HUMAN STAIN is an important addition to a distinguished literary career.
