The John Montgomery Theatre Company and Horse Trade
present
…The
Most Shocking Play You Will See All Year…
SPITTING IN THE FACE OF THE DEVIL
April 14, 2007
The John Montgomery Theatre Company and Horse Trade will present Bob Brader's new monologue, SPITTING IN THE FACE OF THE DEVIL. Performances will be at the Red Room,
located at 85 East 4th Street between 2nd and 3rd
Avenues. Performances will be Mondays at 7pm beginning on May 7, continuing through
July 2.
Robert A. Brader, Sr. died on March 3, 2003. Everybody loved him, but nobody knew him. Now his son will reveal what nobody but he
knows in SPITTING IN
THE FACE OF THE DEVIL, a daring and highly
personal solo show in the vein of Spalding Gray and Mike Daisey. The show is about the death of the author's
father, a terrifying and abusive ex-Marine, and their tension-filled
relationship, which is contrasted with the love of his supportive mother. The father harbors a huge secret which will
be revealed halfway through the piece; this revelation comes as a gigantic and
shocking surprise not only to the author, but also to the audience, who
discovers this information along with him.
The John Montgomery Theatre Company (JMTC) is an international collective of actors, writers,
directors and designers presenting original work with an emphasis on the
collaborative process. Founded in 1994
by Patrick Hillan, JMTC
is currently a Veteran Resident
Company at Horse Trade and has received four OOBR Awards. JMTC has produced over 40 productions in New York City, worked
with over 100 theater artists, and ran their own space in Chelsea for four
years – before it was cool. Their
production of Circle ran for five months Off Broadway. Their most recent production was We Call
Her Benny ("One of the most theatrically interesting pieces I have
seen in years" – BroadwayWorld), which was written and directed by Suzanne
Bachner and starred Bob Brader. JMTC
has received a great deal of a positive press in the past; Time Out New York
said the company was "Off-Off Broadway at its best!”
Bob Brader received a scholarship to The Young Actors Studio when he
was in High School, then came to New York to attend the Tisch School of the
Arts, working with the Stella Adler Conservatory. Some of his New York Theatre roles include Girls School
Vampire playing the roles of Harold Kumel and Johnny, Herod in Salome,
and playing Caesar in the 2002 OOBR award-winning production of DMTheatric’s Antony
and Cleopatra. He just finished a
five month run of BITE playing Parker Lyman followed by Peter in We
Call Her Benny as part of the first-ever FRIGID New York festival, both
with The John Montgomery Theatre Company, of which he is Artistic Associate.
Suzanne Bachner recently
directed her play, We Call Her Benny, to critical acclaim, as part of
the first-ever FRIGID New York Festival.
Other directing credits include Frank D. Gilroy’s The Subject Was
Roses at The Celebration Theatre in Los Angeles and her cult hit, Icons
& Outcasts, which ran for six months at The John Montgomery Theatre and
The Duplex. Suzanne’s award-winning
play, Circle, ran for five months Off Broadway, was produced nationally
and optioned for production in Australia. Her plays have been seen at PS NBC at
HERE, 20th Century Fox at the Coronet Theatre in LA, The Raw Space, Pulse Ensemble
Theatre, and The National Arts Club, among others. Suzanne studied playwriting with Romulus Linney (MFA, first
graduating class of The Actors Studio Drama School at The New School) and is a
member of The Dramatists Guild.
For the past eight years Horse Trade
has been focused on creating an entirely self
sustaining, non funded, live theatrical entertainment company, equipped to
bring it's audience the best of what NYC's independent theater community has to
offer. Horse Trade's facilities include The
Kraine Theater, The Red Room and UNDER St. Marks. Nurturing the abilities and talents of playwrights, directors,
performers, designers, and producers, we have been facilitating the creation of
engaging theater and provocative live entertainment since 1998.
