Brett Singer & Associates, LLC
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 30th through December 9th
Gaff Tape Productions is
pleased to present the New York City premiere of Karen Wheeling-Reynolds’ THE
SCARLETT O’HARA COMPLEX. Performances will begin on Thursday, November 30th
and will be at The Clurman Theatre, Theatre Row, 410 West 42nd
Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues. This production is
presented in partnership with The Wilkes Playmakers of North Wilkesboro, North
Carolina and in collaboration with the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art
in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Has Jenny McKenzie gone mad? Is she
another husband killer like Blanche Taylor Moore or Clara Harris? Her
life-long friends, Libby, Mary Frances, and Cat, just aren’t sure. All
destined to live the life of the upper-crust southern woman in a small town in
North Carolina, they understand how she feels, having caught her husband, Earl,
cheating - again. But, in a world where women are expected to keep
quiet and serve their husbands and their families no matter the circumstance,
divorce is simply not an option. Will she just put it all behind her and
move forward? Not likely, but how far will she go? The
second play written by Karen Wheeling-Reynolds, The Scarlett O’Hara Complex
takes a humorous slant on the subject of infidelity, the plight of the “proper”
Southern woman, and “black widow” murder in the South.
Formed in 2002, Gaff Tape Productions is a
partnership between husband and wife team, David Reynolds and Karen Wheeling-Reynolds, designed to promote
and seek publication and/or production of scripts of emerging playwrights.
Karen’s interest in, and success of, the plays she has written fostered the
initial development of the company. David, who teaches theater at Wilkes
Community College, brings the talents of acting, directing and set/lighting
design to the team.
Karen Wheeling-Reynolds
grew up in Elkville, NC (now Ferguson) where she often heard the many stories
of Tom Dula and how he confessed to killing Laura Foster, possibly to protect
his true love, Anne Melton. In 2000, Karen wrote the play, Tom
Dooley: A Wilkes County Legend, now an annual event in its 6th season in
the western NC region. As well as the other plays she has authored (The
Scarlett O'Hara Complex, Shadow Dancing, Circle the Wagons, and an adaptation
of A Christmas Carol), she is an actress and director. Some of her
directing credits include Wait Until Dark, Plaza Suite, A Few Good Men,
Oliver, It's A Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz, and Miracle on 34th
Street. Karen currently lives with her husband/director in
Wilkesboro, NC where she serves as Executive Director of the Wilkes Playmakers,
Inc.
Director David
Reynolds, a North Carolina native, holds a Bachelor's degree from East
Tennessee State University and a Master of Fine Arts from the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro. After working in regional theater in New
York, Tennessee, and Ohio, David returned to North Carolina where he has
enjoyed community theater and community college productions. He has
