The 7th Sign To Present

The Just Assassins

A Play By Albert Camus

Directed by Allegra Libonati

Performances Begin Wednesday, November 3rd

At the UNDER St. Marks Theater, 94 St. Marks Place

October 11, 2004

The 7th Sign, the company that presented Kurt Vonnegut’s Happy Birthday Wanda June last season, will present Albert Camus’ play THE JUST ASSASSINS.  Allegra Libonati will direct a cast of five.  Performances will be at the UNDER St. Marks Theater, located at 94 St. Marks Place, and will begin on Wednesday, November 3rd.

THE JUST ASSASSINS is a dramatization of the 1905 assassination of Grand Duke Sergei in Moscow, one of the events that precipitated WWI.  The play is enacted from the point of view of the revolutionaries, as they each struggle to rationalize and cope with the idea that perhaps murder is necessary to achieve a more liberated Russia.  But is that murder justified, or will it merely replace one type of violence with another?  The play was written in 1949, and translated from the French. Duke Sergei was the uncle of Tsar Nicholas II, and his assassination is considered the first act of retaliation that spawned the 1905 Russian Revolution (which eventually failed).  Sergei was murdered by 23-year old Ivan Kaliayev, the protagonist of the play.  Most scholars believe that all of the characters in the play are based on real people and true events.  Most notable is the visit Sergei’s widow made to Kaliayev following her husband’s death, in which she forgives the assassin and offers him a pardon, which he refuses.

The cast for THE JUST ASSASSINS will include Elliotte Crowell (Williamstown Theater Festival, Associate Artist with Eric Bogosian), Daniel Deferrari (Williamstown Theater Festival, 7th Sign’s Happy Birthday Wanda June), Mick Lauer (The Times Square Revue), Jake Thomas (Happy Birthday Wanda June), Charlie Wilson (Happy Birthday Wanda June).  The actors trained at the Atlantic Theater Company Acting School, NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.
