Overlap Productions will present NIGHTWATCHES,
a new play by Victoria Stewart. Previews begin on April 13th with
opening night set for Friday, April 14th. Performances will run through Saturday, April 29th at
Access Theater, 380 Broadway, between Walker and White.
Nightwatches,
based on the Cupid and Psyche myth, is a dark erotic tale of intoxicating
sensuality, forbidden passion and love.
In the early 1900s, Mary joins Stephen in a marriage of convenience to
help him run his family's farm. As she
gets closer to uncovering Stephen's past, including what really happened to his
first wife, Mary comes to realize that there are secrets that should never be revealed
and boundaries that should never be crossed – even in the privacy of the
bedroom. The play seeks to lift the
veil on the sex lives of people living in a very repressed, puritanical
culture. The piece explores gender
politics and has particular resonance in our current culture of conservative
backlash.
Victoria Stewart has
received the Helen Merrill Award for Emerging Playwrights, the Ucross/Sundance
residency, the Norman Felton Fellowship and the Jerome Fellowship. In May, her
newest play, LEITMOTIF, will be presented as part of the Pacific Playwrights
Festival at South Coast Rep and in July, her play HARDBALL will be produced at
SPF 2006 on Theater Row. Her work has been performed and developed at the
Joseph Papp Public Theater, Seattle Repertory Theater, Hourglass Group, Circle
X, Vineyard Theatre, Commonweal Theatre Company, Actors Theatre of Louisville,
Guthrie Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theater and represented the United States in
Queensland, Australia.
The cast for NIGHTWATCHES features Lenni
Benicaso, Ivanna Cullinan and Matthew Jared and will be directed by Susanna L.
Harris.
Overlap Productions was
founded in 2000. Previous productions

NIGHTWATCHES will
preview on Thursday, April 13th and will open on Friday, April 14th
and will continue through Saturday, April 29th. Performances will be Tuesdays through
Saturdays at 8PM, with a special performance on Monday, April 17th
