The Internationally acclaimed Gesher Theatre from Tel Aviv, Israel will present the play MOMIK at The Tribeca Performing Arts Center at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), 199 Chambers Street, on Thursday March 20 at 7:30pm, Friday March 21 at 7:30pm, Saturday March 22 at 3pm and 7:30pm. MOMIK is based on the first part of the novel See Under: Love by best-selling Israeli author David Grossman.  This American-Canadian tour of “MOMIK- 2008” is dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel.

Momik, a nine year-old boy, is one of the main characters of the show, and a member of a very loving and close family. His father and mother are Polish Jews and Holocaust survivors, who immigrated to Israel after World War II.  This powerful and inspiring play brings the story of Momik's childhood in 1950s Jerusalem and of his investigations into the Holocaust, triggered by the sudden arrival of his long lost grandfather Anshel, a survivor. Momik is the only child who is raised in an atmosphere of love and kindness, but along with silence and hidden pain. Grown-ups determinately refuse to answer Momik's questions about their life and he creates an imaginary land where his family happily lived before the war. Momik is a visually rich, sad, funny and moving production played by Gesher’s most acclaimed actors.  The story does not deal directly with the subject of the Holocaust; it speaks about disturbing memories that become part of everyday life.

A powerful exposed experience leaves the audience astounded. Something impressive and interesting occurs on the stage every single minute,” wrote the leading Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

The play was adapted by Yevgeny Arye and Elena Laskina, and is directed by Gesher Theatre Artistic Director / Founder Yevgeny Arye.

Gesher Theatre is famous not only in Israel, but around the globe, having successfully performed in 15 foreign countries, a desirable guest and regular winner of the most prestigious international theatrical festivals: at Lincoln and Kennedy centers, in Edinburgh, London, Avignon, and Berlin.  For years, Gesher has been regarded as an inseparable part of the Israeli culture and is one of the only successful bi-lingual theatres in the world. Gesher has also received numerous Israeli theatre awards since its founding in 1993, including The Meir Margalit Award for Best Show, The Israeli Academy Award, and a Special Israeli Award for "Best Quality Initiative."

MOMIK combines David Grossman’s story-telling qualities with the unique stage visions of Israel’s top director Yevgeny Arye and the fantastic design of Michael Kramenko. Gesher’s entire troupe manages to transport the magical atmosphere of the book to the stage with great success.

This show will be performed in Russian with English super-titles.
