The Peccadillo Theater Company is pleased to announce a staged reading of Eugene O’Neill’s ALL GOD’S CHILLUN GOT WINGS which will be directed by OBIE Award-winning director Dan Wackerman (Counsellor-At-Law) at The Skirball Center at NYU, 566 LaGuardia Place.
ALL GOD’S CHILLUN GOT WINGS is the story of Ella Downey and Jim Harris, a white woman and a black man who fall in love amid the poverty and racism of Manhattan’s notorious Five Points district. Musical Director Mark Janas and Director Dan Wackerman will expand upon O’Neill’s use of period music with the addition of several standards from the early days of Tin Pan Alley along with the earthy blues and soaring spirituals of The Bowery, ca. 1905. An inter-racial chorus of gangsters and pimps, prostitutes and con men highlight O’Neill’s concern with the effect of public attitudes and beliefs on personal relationships. The original production (starring Paul Robeson and Mary Blair) was threatened with legal action by the Mayor’s Office and nearly started a riot when it opened at the Provincetown Playhouse in 1924.
Most of the cast from Peccadillo’s Bank Street Theatre production of ALL GOD’S CHILLUN GOT WINGS is returning; Kim Crawford, Mary Maybank, Bergin Michaels, Monica Stith, James Watson, Mariama Whyte, Jennifer McCabe. Joining the cast will be OBIE Award-winner Ty Jones (Classical Theater of Harlem), Kristen Maloney (Dorothy Parker in Peccadillo Theater Company’s The Talk of the Town) and Rachel McKinney (Shakespeare Sedona Company). Of the Bank Street Theatre production, Backstage wrote, “… so passionate that it brought tears to my eyes … Off-Off Broadway at its best.”
Last season, The Peccadillo Theater Company presented its hit revival of Counsellor-At-Law. The production received stellar reviews, leading to sold out houses and multiple nominations and awards – 3 Outer Critics’ Circle nominations, 2 Lucille Lortel Awards, a Drama League Award nomination and an OBIE Award for director Dan Wackerman. In addition, the company’s production of the new musical The Talk of the Town has transferred to the Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel where it is enjoying an open-ended run.
The reading of ALL GOD’S CHILLUN GOT WINGS will be on Friday, October 28 at 8PM at The Skirball Center at NYU, located at 566 LaGuardia Place (off Washington Square South). Tickets will be $30, and can be purchased by calling Ticket Central at (212) 279-4200; tickets are also available online at www.ticketcentral.org.
